Lebanese photographer Serge Ajjar explores the essence of urban living in “A Thin Line” - a series of images celebrating his hometown of Beirut. Najar’s work is underscored by a notably abstract aesthetic. By focusing on the more geometrical facades of the city and framing them in creative ways, he is able to create compositions that feel both complete and compelling.
Another visual constant is the inclusion of at least one person, partially to help define the scale but mainly to create more of a relatable, emotional connection as the people interact with these wonderful, random places he keeps discovering. There is very little premeditation to his technique, and it’s precisely that spontanaeity and open minded playfulness that makes for a series of photos that are both artistically relevant and uplifting.
“Every saturday, I drive my car towards a destination still unknown and guide myself by my instinct, by light and by whatever attracts my eye. This is when I stop, position myself and wait for something to happen. In most cases, what captures my attention are the architectural details. My aim is to try and get closer to abstraction (within the real world). I try to look at my everyday surroundings with a new eye. These photos show what I have seen”All images courtesy of Serge Ajjar. View more at his home page .
