Oscar Oiwa's Stunning Marker Mural

Posted onMarch 23rd 2016Oscar Oiwa's Stunning Marker Mural

Oscar Oiwa has been turning heads upon his return to the 2016 Setouchi Triennale. with “Oiwa Island 2” - an iteration on his previously submitted masterpiece for his 2013 showing, which he drew by hand with permanent markers inside a 40-foot inflatable dome over the course of two weeks. Originally installed inside a gymnasium on Ibuki Island, the 2016 reboot would find a new home in a former soy sauce warehouse on the japanese island of Shodoshima. Oscar took this opportunity to flesh out the remaining seaside scenery - a feat he accomplished in a meager 5 days.

The focal point of this fantastic mural is a rural abode, nestled in the hills of the Setouchi countryside. People enter the dome through the doorway, creating an almost portal-like experience from 3D space to a 2D hyperspace. The interior is saturated in a detailed landscape of oil-based ink, pain-stakingly rendered with his trusty McKie Bold marker. No detail was spared here - from individual blades of grass to sweeping clouds and abstract/organic patterns, the sheer scale of this piece, both micro and macro, are inspiring to say the least.

Impressive as this project is, this was not Oscar’s only contribution to the triannual art festival. Here he is presenting “The Room Inside of the Room”. Fans of MC Escher and the movie “Inception” will appreciate this mind-bending take on perspective as Oiwa demonstrates a playfulness that traverses media and dances on the edge of dimensional perception.
