When you think of a drywall contractor, creativity is probably not high on the list of desired attributes. That is, unless you've hired sculptor and drywall veteran Bernie Mitchell for the job. Inspired by the raw beauty of the Canadian landscapes that surround his hometown, this Alberta native takes his craft to a whole other level with these intricately sculpted wall reliefs. Animals, trees and mountains are among the most common subjects. The end result is impressive but doesn't do justice to his process, one that he's been perfecting since the early 1990s. With an ease we haven't seen since the days of Bob Ross, Bernie makes efficient use of brushes, silverwear and his trusty spackling knife, bringing his compositions to life with a rich palette of forms and textures. The absence of color in these pieces ensure that extra attention is paid to the surface itself, playing off the contrast of light and shadow to portray scenes of panoramic beauty.
