Laser Cut Wood Sculptures by Gabriel Schama

Posted onAugust 31st 2016Laser Cut Wood Sculptures by Gabriel Schama

Oakland artist Gabriel Schama elevates laser cutting to a high art form with this ambitious series of layered, subtractive sculptures. The precursor to these designs were layered fabric cutouts in a variety of hues, but after purchasing a laser cutter (which he affectionately calls Elsie) Gabriel decided to up his game, opting for various grades of wood as his medium of choice.

Given the nature of his tools, geometry plays an important role in these pieces, but at a level of mind-bending intricacy which makes it clear that Gabriel’s not cutting any corners. His most recent masterpieces read as double exposed portraits, combining geometry with natural shapes for a stunning sense of contrast. Viewing his complete body of work a clear progression becomes evident - the mark of and artist who is on a perpetual quest for mastery, never content to rest at the plateau of their development and constantly pushing the envelope. These are simply excellent
