The Dollar Origami of Won Park

Posted onOctober 28th 2018The Dollar Origami of Won Park

Hawaiian artist Won Park , also known as “The Money Folder” constructs a stunning array of three dimensional folded animals, insects and random objects from dollar bills. Won learned origami from his mother early in life - a passion which he would pursue throughout his youth, studying the topic intensely at local libraries and constantly adding to his repertoire of shapes and objects. He would eventually secure a master’s degree in origami and continues to hone his skills to this day.

In an interview with CNN, Won describes how he began to use currency as his primary medium:

“I was a freshman in highschool and wanted to build something but had no paper. I reached in my pocket and found a one dollar bill. It was then that I realized that a dollar is an ideal folding medium. It’s resilient, doesn’t tear easily and is a great piece of paper to fold. The only problem with a dollar is that it only comes in one size, so you’ve got limitations on what you can create. It’s a real challenge that requires a lot of thought.”
