German artist Simon Schubert fuses multiple disciplines, from architecture and interiors to sculpture and illustration in these amazing, hand-crafted paper reliefs using the light and shadows of the page. By manually creasing a wet paper stock, he is able to carve out intricate illustrations of luxurious, baroque interiors. From stately homes to opulent palaces both real and imagined, every column, cornice and chandelier is rendered in astonishing detail.
In an interview with designboom, Simon describes the creative schools of thought which motive him:
“Inspiration most often comes from literature, philosophy, film and fine art. very important are intellectual theories from F.E. Gilles Deleuze, Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz, Douglas R. Hofstadter or Samuel Beckett. I actually work on similar themes since I started doing art and I often take something up from art history or literature and try to continue the thought or the idea”
