Oxford based artist Chloe Giordano takes the humble art of embroidery to beautiful extremes in these hand-stitched tributes to the flora and fauna of nature. Using a methodical and layered approach to her craft, the Buckinghamshire native achieves an almost painterly execution in these organic motifs. By defying the conventional “grid of x’s” commonly associated with the medium, Chloe effectively breathes life into her art - careful thought is given to the direction and overlapping of threads to create the impression of animated forms, offset by strategically colored textiles for maximum contrast.
These pieces are so well done they blur the lines between various fields of discipline, a phenomenon she discusses at length in her Interview with Textile Artist:
“I’m always a bit torn between referring to my work as ‘illustration’ or ‘embroidery’ – having gone into it with the mindset of an illustrator and having no background in traditional crafts, and yet I spend too much time playing around with fabric and sewing needles to feel I can entirely say I’m an illustrator – but I like to think that’s what people find interesting about my art, that it is in a space between embroidery and painting. I’m mostly inspired by the natural world, either in the garden or museums and spend a lot of my free time drawing and collecting things from various places.”
