Artist and product designer Windy Chien creates unique works of art and home accessories using only rope and her imagination. The level of complexity and geometric precision Windy puts into her work takes it far beyond the realm of utility and into ritualistic works of beauty. It is a telling departure from her previous trade at Apple, where she helped build iTunes and the App Store. Like many people in her industry of virtual trades, Windy switched careers in favor of more tangible, hands-on work. It is a nod to the past and acknowledgment of the primal need we have for physical contact with our creations.
Windy discusses where she gets her drive and the community that inspires her:
“Each piece made in my studio in San Francisco’s Mission District is unique, organic, and very much me—they’re all things I originally made for myself. Then I shared them with my friends, an insanely creative group who have been honing their crafts for years and are a constant inspiration. To further build community, I teach spoon carving courses and do creative residencies in the Bay Area and beyond.”All images courtesy of Windy Chien
