The Twisted Furniture of Michael Beitz

The Twisted Furniture of Michael Beitz
New York sculptor / craftsman Michael Beitz throws furniture design for a loop with these wildly dysfunctional yet dynamic adaptations of the most common items. Park benches, tables and desks seem to spring to a silent life all their own, twisting themselves in circles, knots or just appearing to melt in the sun. There's a bit of Salvador Dali being channeled here as Beitz takes the expected and morphs it into the stuff of dreams. There's also an odd sense of desolation at play as each piece effectively shuns its intended function and forms obstructions between people - perhaps it's the artist's manifestation of the invisible barriers we put up on a daily basis, giving a voice to loneliness and frustration. One thing is for certain, there won't be much small talk going on at this particular dinner table.
